Last minute Valentine's Day ideas
Some people expect gifts, or poetry or a dinner reservations for Valentines Day. But nothing really says “I love you” like wanting to spend a weekend alone with your sweetheart in a special setting.
Georgia has some romantic get-away-from-it-all places, anywhere from 45 minutes to a five hour drive from Atlanta. If you’ve waited until the last minute, make reservations at one of these resorts and put the details in that handwritten Valentine’s card. (Add her favorite flowers and maybe something chocolate and you’ve got this holiday under control.)
Here are just a few ideas:
Dahlonega is a pretty little mountain town in North Georgia, with history, shopping and plenty of views. It’s on the Georgia Wine Trail, as many of our top wineries are located nearby. Montaluce Winery and Estates has cottages, vineyards and an award-winning restaurant – all just over an hour from Atlanta at the end of 400.
Beechwood Inn – David and Gayle Darugh run a really unique bed and breakfast, specializing in meals paired with wine. They each have a background in California vineyards, she from the Napa Valley and he from Sonoma. Located in North Georgia in Clayton, the inn is comfortable, romantic and the food is wonderful.
Flat Creek Lodge – Located in Swainsboro, off I-20 towards the coast, this resort and farm offers elegant meals, rustic but luxurious lodging and a spa and bathhouse. They have their own farm so much you will be eating cheeses, vegetables and jellies made right there. They also offer hunting and fishing. You know your Valentine best – for some people, that would be the perfect topping for a getaway.
Jekyll Island – if your romantic weekend plans include children (and yes, it’s possible. Sometimes making plans for the children is what really makes it romantic) then Jekyll Island is a terrific place to go. You’ll enjoy the beach, kayaking or biking the island. Go for nature walks, play golf or explore the history here. Top it off with a visit to the Georgia Sea Turtle Center. You will fall in love all over again with these adorable creatures.
The Inn at Serenbe – There are several choices of lodging, and this is just outside the Perimeter, so it’s perfect if your travel time is short. Enjoy the wonderful farm-to-table dining at the Farmhouse.
Little St. Simon’s – This is like having your own island. Prepare to be pampered, from the lodging, to the food, to being supplied with bug repellent and sunscreen. If you’re planning to bird-watch, they even have high-powered binoculars for your use!
You might as well go all the way and reserve one of the packages at the Cloister at Sea Island. With its five star ranking from Mobil and Forbes, this is truly top of the line for a romantic weekend – and it’s located on Georgia’s golden coast. Of course there’s excellent dining, and you can enjoy the spa as well as golf.
