Your chance to name that waterfall

Do waterfalls inspire you? If you’re in need of inspiration, or you’re feeling inspirational – go visit Cloudland Canyon State Park  in the northwest corner of Georgia. Here two beautiful waterfalls await, as well as a thousand foot deep canyon and plenty of trails to explore it. Those waterfalls have remained unnamed as long as it’s been a state park, and the rangers have decided to sponsor a contest to name them.

The park is on the western side of Lookout Mountain and it is one of the state’s more spectacular views. The canyon was carved by Sitton’s Gulch Creek, which you’ll see rushing by at the bottom. Elevation varies from 800 to 1,980 feet. From the parking lot at the top of the canyon, 150 steps take you down to the first waterfall, and 450 more take you to the next. Below that is a trail that goes down into the canyon bottom, and you can get a different view of the waterfalls from there.

The park has cottages and campground, and the contest winners get a two-night stay in the cottages or a three-night stay at the campground, as well as a Canyon Grill gift certificate and an annual disc golf pass. (If you haven’t played disc golf – it’s worth looking into. The rules are similar, but you throw a plastic disc (like a Frisbee®) at a basket to move from one hole to the next. It’s a sport growing in popularity and Georgia has the Disc Golf Hall of Fame, located on the other side of the state in Appling, outside of Augusta.) Cloudland Canyon is located less than 30 miles from Chattanooga, so there’s plenty to do in the area should you get your fill of waterfalls.

Contestants can download an entry form from GeorgiaStateParks.org/CloudlandContest-NameWaterfalls. The website includes photos of the waterfalls which may look different depending on weather – but the photos don’t do them justice. You’ll want to see them in person. Forms may be mailed or dropped off at the park’s office, open 8 a.m. – 5 p.m daily. Cloudland Canyon State Park is located at 122 Cloudland Canyon Park Rd. in Rising Fawn on Ga. Route 136, 8 miles east of Trenton and I-59, and 18 miles west of LaFayette.

You have until April 15 to get your contest entries in, and winners will be announced April 30.
