Finding Georgia's Dolphins
The dolphins have been swimming in downtown Atlanta for three months now – have you seen them yet? I had a chance to go a behind the scenes recently, and the dolphins came right to the edge of their enclosure to see me up close . (Like the ladies at the nail salon, they were probably talking about me in their own language, but they all smiled and nodded. Or maybe they were laughing.)
While the show has its scripted parts, you’ll still see the intelligence and individual personalities of these graceful and curious animals. There are 11 at the Georgia Aquarium, and they take turns performing in the show.
Have you seen the painted dolphin statues around town? They are part of Dolphins on Parade and you can win Georgia Aquarium prizes now through August by using social media to register your having seen them. Check-in using FourSquare at the site of the statue and send a picture, or tweet a photo of the statue to the Aquarium Twitter account, or post a picture on Facebook. There’s a map of the Dolphins on Parade statues on the Georgia Aquarium site (as well as the rules.) They choose a winner each week.
Another way to win is the scavenger hunt. Four of the statues are not on the map. Clues will be posted Mondays on the Georgia Aquarium’s Facebook page until they are all found. Finally, each month another winner will be randomly chosen for a big prize.
Three Dolphin Tales shows a day are scheduled at 11:30, 1:30 and 3:30. There is an additional cost to see the show above the general admission price and reservations are required. (Check out the variety of ticket options here. You might plan that trip for your birthday – general admission is free for Georgia residents on their birthday!) Unlike that first year the aquarium opened and was so crowded, you don’t have to wait for your “time” to get in. But don’t keep putting off going down there to see the Dolphin – you’ll fall in love with them.
